Julie Bottoni - Scottish Bagpiper
With husband Gary, both longtime pipers with the Billy Mitchell Scottish
Pipe Band, Bottoni demonstrated the art of piping and relate the history
of this ancient instrument.
Ann Trevenen Jenkin ~ Cornish Historian, Teacher, Author
The first female Grand Bard of Cornwall, 1997-2000, direct from Cornwall,
Jenkin presented a workshop aimed at inspiring youth through language,
literature and history.
Maggie Cronin ~ Irish Actress
Direct from Belfast, Northern Ireland, Cronin was a smash hit when she presented her one-women play about Grace O'Malley, "
A Most Notorious Woman", which she wrote. She also offered a workshop.
Morgan Llywelyn ~ Author, Historical Novels
about Irish and Celtic Culture
Direct from County Dublin, Ireland, Llywelyn was the first recipient
of the Exceptional Celtic Woman Award from CWI. Also nominated for
the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1999. Llwelyn continues her historical
work depicting the efforts for peace in Ireland.
Jennifer and Hazel Wrigley - Scottish
Musicians
"The Wrigley Sisters" are twins, direct from Orkney Islands off Scotland,
where they are an effervescent duo on fiddle, guitar and piano. With
a world-wide fan base and four CD albums, and only in their mid twenties,
the Wrigleys visited Milwaukee for the first time for the CWI
conference and presented: "Two players - One breath".
Betsy McGovern ~ Singer, Musician
McGovern is the lead singer for "The Poor Clares" band at O'Flaherty's
Irish Pub in New Orleans. Together with Beth Patterson, the pair
are extremely popular with Celtic Women audiences.
Patrick Gallagher ~ Celtic Artist
Gallagher shared his knowledge of Celtic Art in a
Thursday workshops and participated in a panel of various renowned
artists.
Trefor Williams ~ Co Master of Ceremonies
Welshman Williams shared the stage with Mary Ryan and added a Welsh tale
or two throughout the Conference.
Flora MacDonald Gammon ~ Scottish Folk Singer and Actress
From the mountains of North Carolina, MacDonald Gammon brought
her mountain dulcimer and pure voice to regale us with Scottish folk
songs. This
year she also presented an excerpt from a one-woman play about Flora
MacDonald.
Beth Patterson ~ Singer Musician,Composer
Also representing "The Poor Clares" from New Orleans, Patterson brought
her own Celtic compositions and instrumental expertise with McGovern to
present vibrant Irish music.
Joan Gill ~ Manx Storyteller
Joan brought stories of the culture on the Isle of Man and
shared a visual trip from her family's homeland.
Mary Ryan ~Co Master of Ceremonies
Sharing MC duties again this year, Ryan kept the program moving
at the Conference. Mary co-produces "American Celtic Television" in New
York.
Amy Hale, PhD ~ Cornish & Celtic Scholar
Direct from Truro, Hale has degrees in Folklore and
Anthropology which
support her great interest in Celtic identities in Cornwall.
Beth Vaughan ~ Medieval Teller.
Wandering through the Conference, "Biddy O'Byrne" shared her tales
of yesteryear, and taught us the art of storytelling in a Thursday workshop.
Sian James ~ Welsh Musician
Direct from Newtown Wales, James is a musician, harpist
and composer. She will shared a visual trip to Wales.
Carol McLernon ~ Organist
Celtic Women International member, McLernon entertained on
the Kimball organ during brief interludes in the program.
Her repertoire included songs over 200 years old, in the various Celtic traditions.
